Why is it that a vast majority of us don’t achieve everything we set out to do? There are a select few that do, the larger percentage of us however, do not. It is not that we lack the motivation to do it because if there was no motivation, we wouldn’t set it as a goal in the first place, right?

Your desire and commitment isn’t what is the problem, it is simply because you do not have a system set in place to help you achieve whatever it is you want.

Be S.M.A.R.T
This is definitely something most of you will have already heard of, maybe in school or college but it hasn’t been bought up since then. It is a great way to break up your goal and actually see if you have all parts of it figured out. Breaking down the S.M.A.R.T method, you can see why it is so important.

S = Specific, be very specific with your goal, whatever it is (this helps with visualization too, but we’ll get to that later).

M = Measurable, for example, you want to make lots of money. That’s great! How much? £1 million, £75,000? Get specific in terms of making it measurable.

A = Agreed upon, so once you have the first two sorted, you can agree with whoever else it may concern, or just yourself that you’re going for it.

R = Realistic, what is realistic in this goal with the resources you have? This can be interpreted any way you like as what is realistic to you may not be to others.

T = Time limit, you must set yourself a time limit and hold yourself accountable, without a time limit this will stretch on and on till it is completely forgotten about.

Have a long term end goal with short term wins
When you are setting a goal, always go big. Always. There is no need to think small or think you can’t do something. Yes there is being realistic, but where is the fun in that? Think big, think bigger and pick something that really gets you excited, even frothing at the mouth and get going. The way you will reach this hugely ‘impossible’ task you have set yourself, is to have short term goals that you can achieve within the next couple of weeks or months. These need to be in line with your long term end goal, every time you achieve one of these short term goals it should be seen as a win that you are getting there.

The reason this works so well, is because we are all winners and hate losing, setting yourself a mammoth task like, save £100,000 or lose 15 kilos and just having that as your goal is pretty daunting. If that is what you have set yourself to do, then break it up, into little smaller slices of that huge pie a.k.a your end goal.

Quit trying the same old thing in the hope this time it may work
If this particular goal of yours is something you have tried before and your method has not worked, please save yourself the time and effort and try something different. There is a wealth of information, and we are blessed that we live in the age of the internet where information is available in a few clicks. There is something you need to be aware of, something that works for someone else, may or may not have the same results for you. What you need to do is, find a system that works for you, this can be something completely new, or a slightly altered version of someone else’s system that you can see has worked.

This is quite self explanatory, write down what you are trying to achieve and if you can get it in a picture format to look at daily then do it. This is by far the most important part of your ammo, it is something that you want to impregnate into your subconscious and visit it daily, in the morning and again at night before you sleep. The people that have achieved big things talk about visualisation as the single most important trait they had in achieving their goals. People that were once just like you and I who are now famous used this and worked and worked to make it happen.

Will Smith, Oprah, Jay Z, Kayne just to name a few, swear by the ‘Law of attraction’ and say that this is what got them to where they are now. There was of course a lot of blood, sweat and tears that went into their work but they visualised their path and where they wanted that path to lead them. Michael Jordan spoke about visualisation on making his final shot. It is very important to get this bit right.

Get a partner or a group of partners
Things are much easier to do when you are not the only one doing them. Humans find comfort in doing things that are considered the ‘norm’. As an example, people have gym partners who they train with, they will hold you accountable on those days you don’t feel like going in. If your goal is big (which it definitely should be!) you need a team of people, who can focus on their strengths and put their skills into action.

Nothing good really comes from doing things alone, yes it allows you to be creative and maybe find answers to questions you need answering but the thing is you can never be the master of all trades. Everyone can certainly be the ‘jack of all trades’ but who needs that? Focus on your strengths, forget your weaknesses, find someone who can plug that hole for you and push forward together.

Start! Don’t stop till you finish
One of the most difficult things about doing something is actually starting. The problem with not starting, you are setting yourself up for failure before you have even given yourself a chance. That is not fair to you or all the people who you will impact once you achieve this goal. This goal may just be losing 10 kilos and you’re probably asking yourself, “why would me losing 10 kilos impact anyone else except me.” However, while losing that weight, you’ll be going to the gym, interacting with people, gaining confidence in yourself.

These things will start to show on your well-being well away from the gym. It will give you the confidence to ask that girl out, apply for that promotion or even strike up meaningful conversations when you are out and about. Isn’t that what life’s all about? If your goal solves a big problem, it will make you and your loved ones much happier. This is usually how businesses start, a would-be entrepreneur identifies a problem, works on creating a solution, brings it to market and makes himself a small fortune while doing so.
